There are many ways for a homeowner or renter to save energy on there own. Many of these items you may have heard of before, but they can work.
- Install CFL or LED light bulbs. Energy Star qualified CFL's are 75% more efficient than incandescent lighting, and can save $65 a year or more. Also remember to turn off lights that are not needed. This includes porch lights. You can recycle used (unbroken) CFL's at Home Depot or your local recycling center.
- Change your air filter on your heating/cooling system, at least every 3 months. A dirty filter restricts air flow, making system work harder, costing you money. Also have your heating/cooling system checked or Tuned-Up. This is especially important for the A/C, as the refrigerant charge is important.
- Install a programmable thermostat. Most home owners can install this themselves. When used properly, a programmable thermostat with its four temperature settings can save up to $150 a year in energy costs.
- Perform a walk around the exterior of your home. Look for penetrations through the wall, like pipes and wiring. If you see a gap, use caulk or 1-part foam to seal these items.
- On the interior of your home, walk around and check the trim around windows and doors (usually wood). If you feel a gap between the trim and drywall, simply use caulk to seal. If your home has a basement and it is unfinished, look at the area just above the wall (Rim/Band Joist area). If you have any penetrations, seal them with caulk or 1-part foam.
- Always make sure you turn off unused electrical items in the home. Power strips can be helpful in this. An example is locate your cell phone chargers in one location, put them on a power strip. When not charging a phone, just turn of the strip.
